According to "the Cleggs of Old Chatham", family
tradition says that some of the Cleggs went to England to France
in 1066, with the Norman invasion of William the Conqueror.
--1600's--
*Henry Clegg -- from Wakefield, England to Northampton, VA
USA in 1685
This section of the family continued to migrate to
VA until at least 1734. Some reports say as many as 7 brothers
came, including Henry (in 1682), John (in 1685), Peter and
George, with Issac, grandson of John (in 1734)
*John Clegg -- settled at Pennaquid, Maine in the year
1687, and Thomas Clegg, his son, was later recorded.

*Thomas, Matthew, & Alexander Clegg -- From Rochdale,
England to Belfast, Ireland, to Philadelphia, PA, USA after 1755.These brothers settled in Lancaster Co., PA, and soon
migrated to other states, such as, Indiana, Virginia, &
Tennesee.
--1800's--
*Benjamin and George Clegg -- settled in Baltimore, MD in
1804;
*Alfred, David, Edward, Francis, George, Henry, Isaac, James,
Joseph, Nathaniel, Robert, Samuel, and Thomas Clegg, -- all
arrived in Philadelphia PA between 1820 and 1869;
*Benjamin 10, Caroline 7, Francis 25, Isaac 22, Mark 20 and
Sarah 39, all Cleggs, arrived at Philadelphia aboard the Little
Cherub on 14 Sep 1827. The group represents 3 families and
the father for all except Sarah, who was his third wife, had come
7 1/2 years earlier thru the same port on the Nancy on 6
Apr 1820. His name was Nathaniel Clegg, born 28 Jul 1784
near Ossett, W. Yorkshire. Francis Clegg returned to
England, I don't know just when, and then brought his wife Letitia
26, and 2 sons, George 1 and Isaac 3 with him to the US,
again thru the port of Philadelphia on the Julius Caesar
