Feb, 4, 2000 I am a descendant of John Powell (Henry) Clegg of Walton County Georgia, and I am curious if anyone knows what he (and the family there) did for a living? Cotton? Timber? Cattle? Farming? Did they own a bunch of land? Etc. I know what Henry's son did when he came to Texas, but I am curious why the family came to Texas & how they had the money to do so? Also seeking info on why John Powell (Henry) Clegg left his wife Sarah Elizabeth Whitset in Georgia (where she died in 1892). He just packed up the kids and came to Texas. Whitsetts don't help me with this mystery, so any info on Sarah is appreciated. |

February 26, 2001 I've recently found through my great grandmother's death certificate that her parent's were William J. Riley, b. in Alabama and Nancy Clegg, b. in S. Carolina - probably abt. 1840. I've also found their marriage record, they were married Jan. 10, 1861 in Butler Co., Alabama. My great grandmother, Alice, was born on Sept. 7, 1866 in Covington Co., Ala. There are hardly any records of Clegg's in Alabama, much less in these counties. If anyone can help me to get any further so that I may be able to at least get better clues as to whom Nancy Cleggs parents are I would be ever so grateful. |

July 13, 2001 My great great grandfather is James Clegg [b. 19 August 1861 in Bradford, England…d. 6 April 1935 in SLC UT] m. Margaret Salina Jackson [b. 19 May 1872 in Parkersburg, WVA…d. 9 May 1949 in SLC UT] on 24 Nov. 1898 in Parkersburg, WVA (my mother has the original marriage certificate of this union). I am trying to find James’ parents. These are the clues I have. His cousin lived in SLC and his name was Rue {Lawton?} Clegg. James’ parents were James Clegg and Mary (stated on his death certificate) and they lived in England. He had a sister named Elizabeth. I know that when James married Margaret, both of his parents were dead and his sister refused to settle the estate with him because of his gambling. When he was working in the oil fields in Canada, one of Elizabeth’s sons approached him and informed him that his sister had died and they needed him to come home and settle the family estates. My grandfather refused to do so since he and his sister had been on bad terms. My grandmother said that my great great grandfather never mentioned his family in England, although he tried to tell them who his sisters' son was and how to notify him after he had his first stroke but was unable to do so since he could no longer speak or write. In going through the records in family search, it reasons out that he probably is the son of James Clegg [b. 28 May 1837 in Preston, Lancashire, England…d. 9 Feb. 1875] and Mary Ann [b. abt 1840 in Preston, Lancashire, England]. This son is the son of Jonathon Clegg and Ellen Walmsley who settled in Heber City, Utah. This would explain why Margaret and James settled in Utah (even though they were not LDS) since his grandfather Jonathon was there, and he had no other kinship in the US. I have no proof of this relationship other than the clues I listed above. I am fairly certain that James Clegg (Mary's husband) was in the military in England, which is why he didn't travel with his parents (Jonathon and Ellen) and the other children. I do not know how to check the military records in England and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could tell me how to do this so I can confirm this link. I am very interested in any information which may assist me in getting over this stumble block. Thanks. (Sorry for the lengthy explaination). Cyndi |

I am looking for information on my Grandmother's family. Her name was Lily Clegg and her family was from the Manchester, England area. Her parents were Joseph & Nellie Clegg and they had 6 children: Arthur, Edith, Jack, Joseph, Nellie and my grandmother Lily. At the time of my Grandmother's marriage James Lawson (Her husband) was living in the Stars & Stripes Club on London Road, Manchester, England and Lily was living (looks like) Nelson Glen, Bradford. Does any of this connect with anyone out there |

I am trying to trace my father's grandmother. Her name was Margaret Clegg and she was born, according to the family bible, in Derryrollen parish, Fermanagh County on the 7th August, 1836. She was the youngest daughter of James & Martha Clegg. She was married by a Wesleyan Minister in Brisbane, Moreton Bay, in the colony of NSW, on the 5th September 1856, to Robert Aland |

Feb 21, 2002 I am looking for information about Ernest Clegg, a former Major in the Bedfordshire Regiment. He came to New York about 1919, 1920 where he undertook some cartography assignments, painting and illustrations. I would appreciate any information about this gentleman. |
| CrrCassidy@aol.com | Feb 21, 2002 Hello, My Grandmother's maiden name was Dean, she lived in the Accrington area of Lancashire. I was told a long time ago that we had links to the name Clegg. I am therefore looking for any information on one of our ancestors. His name was 'John knox Clegg' or ' Johnox Clegg. Apparently he was burn't for being a witch or hanged ( unsure of the year). I have been unable to find any information on him, so if any one does have any information please could they e-mail me. Thank you. |
